Hello, my name is Basil Bakhshi. My earliest years were shaped by the boundaries of a war-

torn Pakistan, where I lived as a street urchin until I was adopted into a family whose

resources and stability felt both foreign and transformative. Those beginnings left an

indelible mark on my vision of the world—one that holds tension, resilience, and

unexpected beauty in balance.

Today, I live and work in the Finger Lakes region of New York, a landscape of natural light

and depth that inspires much of my practice. My artistic journey spans across oil painting

and ceramics, where I explore form, atmosphere, and the quiet power of presence. I am best

known for my plein-air oil painting that received Best in Show in French Alezum,

Pennsylvania—a recognition that affirmed my dedication to painting directly from life and

place.

The meaning of my work is embodied in the concept of shibumi: a Japanese word often

translated as 'effortless perfection' or 'a beauty that is unpretentious, yet profoundly

moving.' This philosophy guides my process. I seek to create work that feels inevitable,

balanced, and resonant, yet carries with it the rawness of lived experience.

Through brush, clay, and fire, I hope my art invites viewers to sense both the fragility and

endurance that weave through the human condition.
